Heading to the wave pool with my boys and neighborhood kids.  Days like this are my favorite, trying to squeeze it all in before end of summer.

If your stuck for a hallway bulletin board idea check out my new Robot theme!  I have plenty of boards in front so I made "Welcome" and "Gear Up For A New Year" Chevron letters placed on Gears/Cogs.    I put the name plates on lockers  with student names.

This set also includes incentive charts, birthday certificates, book marks, lost tooth and hundred certs.

My younger son and I are heading into school tomorrow , hoping to get front board up, I'll post a picture if I do!   Enjoy!

Read Write Think ...a Great "Go to"!!

Are you looking for Language Arts enrichment resources?  Be sure to check out the online interactive sources at Read Write Think.org .  One of my favorites is the postcard generator.  Students can write a postcard to or from a story character or to the author of a story.  When we read a story about Chinatown during Chinese New Year students wrote a post card to their families describing the setting using five senses.
Students love the design choices too!
Check out all the interactive choices-it's a great go to!    Jen

I'm tired of my first week books, help me find new titles!

Teachers and Students learn from each other book!

I have been wanting to incorporate some new books into our first week.  The message of this book is heartfelt and the pictures are adorable.  I think this book is perfect for beginning a year long adventure together!  Maryann Cusimano Love says:

"As a teacher myself for over twenty years, I know first hand how much I learn from my students, and how important the special bond is between students and teachers, each rooting for each other and helping each other to grow"

Check out Maryann Cusimano Love's website :

Book To Read When Setting Class Rules

My student "howl" (yes pun intended) when we read Marley Goes to School   from the popular Marley series by John Grogan.  As you can imagine Marley causes quite a ruckus when he follows his best friend to the first day of school.  This book lends itself to a great conversation about rules and the chaos that can happen when rules aren't followed.

Share your ideas!  I love First Day Jitters but I'm looking for some new titles to jazz it up this year:)

Dad You Rule

Last Day Happy Dance!!!!

Although we won't be in school for Father's Day I was inspired by a trinket that's been a  staple in our house for many years.  When my 16 year old son was in 1st grade, he bought a special Christmas gift for my husband at his school "Frosty Shop",  He was so proud to present the wooden ruler to my husband.  The words "Dad You Rule"  are largely written with a black sharpie.

I decided to make a 1.50  "Dad You Rule"  product for my TPT store
.
Stop by and check it out!  This includes" Dad You Rule" stationary, portrait paper, Top  5 Things about my Dad  list, and  Dad's favorite things flap book .

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Fathers-Day-Dad-You-Rule

Enjoy creating this with your class!

Happy Father's Day to All the Dads out there!  Please don't let this go to your head,  remember its really the Moms that rule!!!  LOL

Happy Day!  Happy Summer!

Short Vowel Review/Word Families

When I was teaching first grade I remember I was always BLOWN AWAY in the spring by student's progress since the 1st day.     I don't see as big of a of a jump in a 2nd  from  beginning of year.  However, I did remind myself the other day about the growth of my lowest readers.  My low reading group  started the year with short vowel review work.    As I was taking things out to copy for beginning of next year I found their favorite, "Monster Review Word Slide".  Below is an idea of what all 20 look like :)  Of course O & U are included I just wanted to give you a taste of what they were.like.  The words slide through the short vowel sound card to create a "magic window" to read short vowel words.  Visit my Teachers Pay Teachers Store  to see a sample of the full black and white set that is included.  I like to save on colored ink so I print the color ink set for ccnters and the back and white set is for students to take home.  I have also printed the black and white set on bright cardstock, super cute!

Encoding, Segmenting, Handwriting..Oh My!

At times I become very frustrated when correcting papers.  I often self-talk "How can this student NOT be putting the final e on a CVCe word?" or   "Come on they know Cake is not spelled Cack!"
I have to breathe deeply, sip my Diet Coke and remember that they are only 8 years old and the process of spelling and writing can be daunting.
When writing students must encode,  or retrieve and produce letters and symbols. By the time the student gets to handwriting and correct formation so much has already taken place in their brains, its no wonder they put their heads down on the desk!
I try my hardest to incorporate fun ways to practice the sound retrieval and letter production process during the day.  One of my favorite ways is by writing Top Ten Lists .  Students can do this activity when done with work, for homework, morning work or center time.  I love looking at their illustrations  ...Jen
