Encoding, Segmenting, Handwriting..Oh My!

At times I become very frustrated when correcting papers.  I often self-talk "How can this student NOT be putting the final e on a CVCe word?" or   "Come on they know Cake is not spelled Cack!"
I have to breathe deeply, sip my Diet Coke and remember that they are only 8 years old and the process of spelling and writing can be daunting.
When writing students must encode,  or retrieve and produce letters and symbols. By the time the student gets to handwriting and correct formation so much has already taken place in their brains, its no wonder they put their heads down on the desk!
I try my hardest to incorporate fun ways to practice the sound retrieval and letter production process during the day.  One of my favorite ways is by writing Top Ten Lists .  Students can do this activity when done with work, for homework, morning work or center time.  I love looking at their illustrations  ...Jen

Jen,

I am thrilled to have found you again! I came across your blog at school but I am blocked there and cannot comment or follow. I jotted your blog down but somehow got the address wrong and couldn't remember where I found you. =(

I have been going crazy trying to find you again and I could remember your blog was something about a second glance but I wasn't typing in 2nd but spelling it. Anywho....I love this *freebie* and of course am following you now! =)

I would love for you to come visit me when you get the chance. =)

Just sent my class home for the summer. I would like to have heard them tell me about their favorite characters though. We had the 2nd highest reading test taken this year so they've met a lot of characters. Next year we'll be #1 and we'll do this activity. Thanks.

Hi Jason!
Wow you get out early- Enjoy your summer. I'm glad you like the activity. Follow this link below to my TPT site- I sell a collection of 30 for 2.00. This activity really opens my eyes to who is and who isn't applying learned sounds too!
Happy Summer! Jen
